food safety involves everyone in the food chain

I extend my most heartfelt condolence to the family of Shayne.

What I read from The Straits Times Singapore this afternoon saddens me tremendously. (Click on this link to read the article: Newspaper Article_30 Oct 2014_4-year-old’s death from eating tainted food) Food is a basic need. As consumers, we have the rights to obtain safe food for consumption. When food is unsafe for consumption, it poses serious health risk to consumers.

Singapore is one of the countries which has the lowest incidences of food-borne diseases outbreaks due to the stringent food safety system that has been put in place. This, however, does not mean that we should take things lightly. The assurance of food safety should be a shared responsibility of both the food industry and consumers (AVA, 2010).

Food contamination can be prevented by personal hygiene practices, kitchen hygiene practices, proper food handling practices and proper food storage practices. Do find out more about Food Safety Education from this link.
